Volunteering at Steward Wood

Many, many people have been moved by the experience of coming to volunteer at the woods. Today, we’ve got a few words and a beautiful picture from Sine, a volunteer from Denmark… You can find out when the next volunteer day is on the main website front page. Thanks, Sine!

Steward image (Sine) low resI first stumbled across your community on a bike trip from Devon to London in October. Arriving tired and sweaty, I pushed my bike up the steep hill to the communal fireplace, where lots of people chatted amongst the golden sun dapples. The atmosphere was amazing & the fire was bright.

Curiosity in the way you lived made me come back in early November to volunteer. We spend the Sunday exploring all kinds of fungi. The Woodland is so full of wonders when you take notice! It was a wet but eventful week with digging, moving wood & a fun trip to the skip! Always with great conversation.

It was interesting to hear your thoughts about having chosen to live the way you do. Many great chats around the fire, singing & drumming. Not to forget debating my horoscope! I felt inspired by your dedication, warmth, your self-built timber dwellings and your lovely and fun children. And not least by all the different activities taking place there.

A community like Stewards is really special & hugely important; it inspires far & beyond. I will take some of it to Denmark…

It was so wonderful meeting you all! Hope to visit again.

Best wishes,
